Engagement Session Tips

Happy spring!! We are so excited about this feature, because were offering our advice for one of the most exciting things in the wedding journey: the engagement session! I love them because couples are still on cloud nine from being engaged. Plus there is so much wedding excitement swirling around them. Like most wedding prep, all of the advice can get a little overwhelming. That is why we we came up with this post on Engagement Session Tips! Now you can have your dream engagement session with all the advice you need in one place!

We are so excited to use this gorgeous styled shoot designed by the lovely team at Pearl White Events. They did a fabulous job of bringing together some of the most talented vendors in the area. This styled shoot was actually the real engagement session for our models, Christie and Eddie! Orange Blossom Bride ran a feature on this shoot which you can check out here: Let Love Blossom Engagement Session.

Ready for your close up?

Most brides hesitate when it comes to having their hair and makeup professionally done for their engagement session. However in my experience it is worth the investment. Brides want to feel pretty and confident, so having that polished off look will do just that. You can even use your engagement session as a practice run for your wedding hair and makeup. Do not be afraid of spending some extra time on your engagement session look. I am not saying you must do this at all. However, I can say that most brides will definitely feel more confident and camera ready at their session.

You can see the amazing job Brittney with Brie and Brie did for our styled shoot. Having your makeup done professionally takes the stress out of wondering how you look throughout your session. No matter the setting, Brittney had our couple looking absolutely flawless in every shot.

Location, location, location.

Do not hesitate to check out your photoshoot location beforehand and find places that make you feel comfortable and happy. Having an idea of the space maximizes our time for getting all the shots you want. It also allows time for some spontaneous photos as well. Do not worry about a location being “ugly” because there is beauty all over the place. We just have to find it!

Christie and Eddie are such a fun couple and I love that they picked a playground for one of their locations. I mean, how can you not have fun at a playground? You could tell they really enjoyed being together in a place that made them feel comfortable.

Dress up or down? Do both!

After the playground we moved inside as our couple changed into a more dressed up look. I tell our couples to plan for at least two outfits. The first being a casual look and the second being a little more dressy. You can see both looks on Christie and Eddie in our styled shoot. I love adding accessories for a pop of color and I also recommend having nails in light neutral colors. Most importantly, be comfortable because we want your session to reflect you!

Personalizing your session even more

You can always personalize a space by bringing some of your own props to your session. I think it is always fun to see what couples come up with. Whether it is a pet, bottles of wine or champagne, journals, really anything! I always tell couples to bring whatever truly reflects them individually or as a couple. Extra advice if you bring a pet- have someone there to watch them when they are not in photos or to help get their attention.

In our shoot we got some very romantic shots in front of a cozy fireplace draped in dramatic garland provided by Sarah from Bluegrass Chic. She did an amazing job and the greenery really made a statement throughout the shoot! We really love the little accents that were used to dress the space. It just added that extra touch to make the space look warm and inviting. We also used a beautiful wedding invitation suite by Pretty Peacock Paperie for some amazing photos. Wedding invitations are also great to bring to your engagement session!

I loved the romantic setup when we moved outside to the park. We used a wooden arbor with illusion hoops of greenery hanging down. They looked like they were floating in midair! The chaise from A Chair Affair made the perfect addition to the romantic set. We played around with different ideas and poses for some amazing shots!

A day in the park and a sunset to remember

We completed the shoot with some beautiful sunset photos. For the last of our engagement session tips, we highly recommend that you are on time for your shoot. Make considerations for traffic, hair delays, fashion emergencies, and so on. It is especially important if your session is determined on the time of day, like sunrises or sunsets. The sun is not going to wait for you!

We loved every moment of this styled shoot and we hope you all enjoy these beautiful images. Finally, you must check out the gorgeous video created by our amazing videography team, Love and Lustre Weddings at the bottom of the page! It is truly a work of art!

We hope you were able to find our engagement session tips helpful and are able to use this session as inspiration for your own!
